AAUP Names Mia McIver Executive Director

Mia McIver has joined the AAUP’s staff as the new executive director. McIver comes to the AAUP with extensive experience as a faculty member and leader in the higher education labor movement. McIver taught in the writing programs at the University of California, Los Angeles, for fifteen years. During that time, she led seven thousand UC faculty members and librarians as president of the University Council–American Federation of Teachers Local 1474.

She also recently served as the head of the Universities Council of the California Federation of Teachers, where she coordinated organizing, policy, and collective bargaining campaigns across AAUP chapters and AFT-affiliated unions in the state. As the chair of Higher Education Labor United, she has worked in coalition with more than fifty unions and advocacy organizations nationwide to advance a vision for American higher education as a public good. McIver brings to the AAUP a wealth of experience in organizing faculty members and a record of enacting legal, political, and media strategies that empower all higher education workers.

A long-time member of the AAUP, she is committed to supporting staff, AAUP chapters, and state conferences in vigorously promoting the AAUP’s core values of shared governance and academic freedom. McIver will work from both Washington, DC, and Los Angeles in order to strengthen the AAUP from coast to coast.

“I’m excited to join the AAUP at this crucial moment as we organize to defend the future of higher education as a public good in our democracy,” McIver said.
