Report on Academy-Industry Relationships Published in Book Form

By Cary Nelson

The AAUP and the AAUP Foundation are pleased to announce the publication of Recommended Principles to Guide Academy-Industry Relationships. The 368-page report is the product of four years of work. It has been updated, clarified, and extensively edited since a draft was published online for comment in 2012.

In preparing the report, it became clear that the issues at stake in industry-funded research apply to government and nonprofit grants as well. The report offers general advice on basic faculty intellectual property rights; mechanisms to ensure academic freedom in publishing; handling faculty and administrator conflicts of interest; and grievance procedures for faculty members, academic professionals, and students. A new appendix provides language appropriate for inclusion in faculty handbooks and collective bargaining agreements.

Selections from the report are available at http://www.aaup.org/IP/policy; because it is much longer than typical AAUP reports, the full document is being published in book form. The AAUP Foundation is publishing the book, which will be distributed by the University of Illinois Press. A number of AAUP chapters and state conferences helped to underwrite the publication, including the chapters at Connecticut State University, the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, Michigan State University, the University of New Hampshire, Oakland University, the University of Rhode Island, Rider University, Utah Valley University, and Wright State University. Financial assistance was also provided by the Assembly of State Conferences and the AAUP state conferences in Alabama, California, Colorado, Connecticut, Illinois, Louisiana, Minnesota, Missouri, New York, Ohio, Texas, and Washington. The AAUP Foundation has used these donations to cover the costs of editing, design, and printing.

The book is available from the University of Illinois Press, local bookstores, and online booksellers. It will be available in hardbound, paperbound, and e-book formats. The paperbound edition has a list price of $25.
