Episode 1 of our third season is a conversation about the racial equity initiative at the AAUP with Glinda Rawls, chair of the AAUP Racial Justice Committee, and AAUP president Irene Mulvey. Rawls says that if we really want to get to a place where there is a sense of belonging for those in marginalized groups, we're going to have to grapple with the history of higher education and figure out how to ensure that traditionally marginalized voices not only have a seat at the table but are leading the way forward.
In our second episode of season 3, we sit down with Charles Toombs, president of the California Faculty Association, and AAUP general counsel Risa Lieberwitz to talk about the way forward to greater racial diversity and equity in higher education after the Supreme Court overturned forty years of precedent and ended race-conscious admissions as we know it. In this episode, Toombs talks about how the California Faculty Association has centered its work in anti-racism and social justice and says that systemic change is the key to bringing about real progress in higher education.
Later in the fall, we’ll talk to faculty activists at Rutgers University about their efforts to create an organizing model that brings together all types of workers across the university in order to broaden power and increase equity. In another episode, we’ll sit down with University of Southern California professor Atia Sattar to discuss academic motherhood and the unrecognized labors of non-tenure-track faculty women of color.
