Signaling a new emphasis on organizing, the Nevada Faculty Alliance (NFA)—working together with the national AAUP—has hired Derrick Osobase, an executive director with significant organizing experience. After moving with his family from Texas to Nevada in 117-degree heat, Osobase began work on July 15.
Osobase joins the NFA after having served for many years as a legislative and political director and also as lead organizer for the Texas State Employees Union. An experienced organizer in a right-to-work context, he has led numerous campaigns and successfully recruited members across Texas into political action committees. He has also mentored and supervised organizers and participated in organizing drives at the University of Texas at Austin and the University of Houston. Osobase is part of a renewed effort in Nevada to unify academic employees in the NFA. On November 9, he and elected leaders will host the first statewide general meeting of the Nevada Faculty Alliance AAUP.
